Senior Associate

Ken is a specialist financial services and investment funds lawyer with a strong focus, and market reputation, on advising FinTech companies.

Ken advises on all aspects of financial services regulation, including financial markets conduct law, licensing, registrations, and AML/CFT compliance. His experience includes advising numerous international and domestic FinTech platforms, including securities brokerage firms, derivative issuers, payment providers, and equity crowdfunding and peer-to-peer lending platforms. Ken is also highly experienced in blockchain and digital asset space, advising on regulatory compliance, token offerings, and customer and network terms.

Ken also advises on investment funds, joint ventures, limited partnerships, and capital raising, leveraging his prior experience as a corporate lawyer at a Tier 1 Malaysian law firm. Drawing on his expertise in both wholesale and retail investment funds, Ken provides comprehensive advice on all aspects of fund management and structuring.

Advising a wide range of New Zealand and international FinTech platforms. This includes advising securities brokerage platforms, digital payment platforms, licensed derivatives issuers, peer-to-peer lending and equity crowdfunding platforms. Key clients include Marex, Dosh, EasyCrypto, Swyftx, Homeshare, WorldRemit, American Express, Tressel, Emerge, Uber, Rippling, Goldie, Go Lend, YouTrip, Guavapay.

Advising various participants in the Financial Markets Authority's inaugural regulatory sandbox, launched in December 2024 to provide a controlled environment for the most innovative NZ fintechs to test their products and services.

Advising Camco on the establishment of TIDES, a first-of-its-kind blended finance fund for the Pacific Islands. Backed by first-loss equity from the NZ and UK governments, the fund aims to mobilise US$100 million for renewable energy projects.

Advising on the structuring and establishment of wholesale and retail funds, including unit trusts and limited partnerships. Key clients include Camco and Jasper Property Limited.

Providing specialist advice to local and international payment providers on financial regulatory matters including AML/CFT compliance.

Advising digital asset businesses, including exchanges, issuers, creators, brokers, and wallet providers, including Swyftx, EasyCrypto, Toha Network, Localcoin, and others, including leading global exchanges and platforms.

Advising over a dozen financial advice firms, including some of NZ’s largest financial advice networks, on the financial advice regulatory regime that came into effect in 2023. This includes advising on licence applications, business structuring, disclosure, and commercial agreements.

Advising on various major corporate M&A transactions involving offshore businesses.
